10 Quick SEO Tips For Your WordPress Blog. – December 14th, 2009

So you’ve composed a masterpiece on your WordPress blog and want to share it with more than just your RSS feed subscribers? I’ve put together some quick SEO tips to help you get your work of art some attention in the search engines.  Before you hit that submit button and publish that blog post consider the following quick SEO tips:

1.) Install some tools. Download and install the All In One SEO Pack. This widget / add on allows you to customize your individual post entries meta tags and titles for search engines. Once installed, it will allow you to compose individual customized metas for that post.

2.) Optimize, Optimize, Optimize. After your work of art is complete, pause and jump back into the blog. Be mindful of the keywords that people would use to get to your blog or that particular post and be certain that you’ve actually used those keywords in your blog.  You can always do a little keyword homework here first:

3.) SEO Friendly URL’s. The default out of the box non customized wordpress boasts an UGLY link structure.  Each post may have a URL like: http://www.yourdomain.com/blog/postid=?1235 etc.  Life could be so much brighter if that blog URL looked like: http://www.yourdomain.com/blog/seo-wordpress-tips/ .  WordPress calls the URL’s to your blog posts permalinks and it is relatively simple to change once you install your blog.  Check out this link on WordPress.org to learn about changing your permalinks.

4.) Attract inbound linking.  Perhaps one of the most efficient and effective way to improve your blog’s appeal to Google is be linked to from like minded popular blogs / websites.  If you create quality content for your blog readers and make it easy for folks to link to your blog, you are much more apt to get some quality inbound links.

5.) Comments. Some of my clients cringe when I encourage them to accept comments on their blogs.  I know it is a bit of work to keep the comment spammers at bay, but if you get a quality comment with quality content, it can only enhance your post to Google and the other search engines.

6.) RSS feed.  Make certain that you place a text link to your RSS feed on the home page of your web site and within the blog itself.  We want Google to crawl that feed as well. If it’s a pretty orange graphic, Google doesn’t know what to do with it.

7.) Track and measure results: It’s important to know whats happening with your blog in relation to traffic, keywords, bounce rates, etc.  Place your Google analytics code in the footer.php of your wordpress blog them that you have active. Many folks forget to install their analytics in their blog.

8.) Notify your tweeps, facebook friends, linked in drinking buddies, frat brothers, etc. each time you compose a new blog post.  The majority of the search engines are now picking up live social media feeds, you can ‘wire’ your blog feed into your social media accounts in a variety of ways so that each time you click that post button, your entire Tribe is notified: at the same time, the search engines are watching…..

9.) Categorize. Be certain that your blog categories are named specifically. In other words, sticking all of your blog articles in the untitled folder category won’t be contributing much help towards your organic SEO quest. Name your categories and remember to use.

10.) Keep on trucking. Once you start blogging, don’t stop.  Rome wasn’t built overnight, nor will your rankings shoot to the top within a week just because you finally composed one blog article. This is an engine that needs gas, keep the engine running with a steady stream of blogs.

FEED your audience first and the rest will start to come naturally.

I’ll write about some mechanics and specifics in my next few blogs.  The true magic with blogging is that you assert your expertise to your readers, prospects, frat brothers, drinking buddies and prove to Google that you are newsworthy, relevant, special and just an all around swell person.
