While everyone is scrambling to learn the true value of social media, the team at On Target Web Solutions is focused on what we can learn from Social Media and how we can constantly improve SEO for our clients. Like any other form of marketing, social media is all about a conversation. There’s really nothing mystical about, there’s no snake oil, there’s no amazing silver bullet. It’s all about who, what, when, where and why. Social Media is all about the conversation, and we believe that SEO is the same way.

SEO is a two way conversation. It’s about knowing what your clients and prospects are looking for and then it’s about responding to their needs (Google search) to answer their questions, to enlighten them, to entice them, to educate them and to endear them to your brand. Your prospects speak, you learn, you speak back with the content that they are seeking. Great SEO is constant. Great SEO never stops, it continues to learn, to observe and to evolve.

With that being said, how can you use your Social Media platforms to improve your SEO?

Great social media is about two-way conversations. Conversations between you and your prospects and vice versa. Nestled within those conversations is gold. Your prospects and clients are speaking to you about your brand and products using THEIR language. Your mission: LEARN Their language. Pay very close attention to what keywords they are using, note how they refer to your products and start crafting your messaging speaking their language. The more you speak their language, the more they know you are listening, the more your messaging will convert, the more Google will index your web site using the language of your prospects.

The key: listen to them, engage them and learn from them. The more that you relate to your clients, the more successful your Internet marketing efforts will be.

In my next few posts, I’ll focus on some concrete ways you can use Google+, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to improve your overall SEO efforts.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

So many business folks look at me like I have four heads when I inform them that in order to get their web site some visibility in the search engines that they will need to contribute to a blog or at the very least, add some content to their web site on a regular basis. Content is still king online and I wanted to share some personal insight as to why I feel that it is so very important….

Here are 6 reasons I bother to blog weekly:

- Google crawls my site rapidly and often. The more content that I create, the more Google wants to come back to my site and crawl it. The more it crawls my site, the more opportunities I have to edit / alter keywords, etc., to grab certain key rankings.

- Google indexes my content rapidly. I’ve written blog articles before that have been indexed IN google within 13 minutes flat. This means I can obviously get my message out quickly and be able to be relevant on trending topics. Again, Google has come to expect content from me, so it constantly is checking for new content.

- Ideas & Insight. The more content that I create, the more I’m forcing my mind to stay on top of my industry. This of course translates to being an authority in my field.

- Credibility. I’ve been invited to speak at countless conventions and associates because of my blogging. I’ve also been on local Orlando news channels frequently because they found a relevant blog article in Google and called my company.

- Newsletter Food. On Target sends out a weekly newsletter to our client base. Because I generate content for my blog, it auto-populates our newsletter and automatically sends it out weekly. I don’t have to create articles in multiple places.

- Social Media Feeder. Because of my blogging, a lot of my social media posts, etc., get automatically populated. I’m able to quickly disseminate my my insight across multiple platforms & now that Google loves to crawl social media outlets, I want those blog posts linked to from those outlets.

If you despise writing, hire someone. If you don’t have the time, pay someone who does have the time. If you really want your web site and it’s Internet marketing presence to grow, content is a hefty consideration that must be a part of your overall Internet Marketing plan. My team at On Target is all about quality, relevant and intelligent content creation.

WordPress, once configured properly, can be a tremendous tool to help further your organic SEO efforts. Here are a few core SEO plugins AND settings that your WordPress enabled web site needs to be using in order to thrive in the search engines:

Initial Configuration Tips

1.) Permalinks.
When you install WordPress right out of the box, you need to change the ‘permalink’ structure. The default permalink (site links) is a bit ugly and not conducive to an optimum SEO campaign: you can learn more about changing the default permalink settings at this link: http://codex.wordpress.org/Settings_Permalinks_Screen

2.) Setup Ping Services.
Many web masters miss this, but you can alter and add ping services in WordPress so that each time you compose an article, it alerts news feeds, etc. Here’s a great link to help you alter this setting and get your brilliance out on the web quicker: http://codex.wordpress.org/Update_Services

3.) PRIVACY settings.
Sometimes, WordPress is installed with privacy enabled. This means it blocks search engines from ever accessing your site. This, of course, is NOT good for SEO. You can double check your privacy settings in the settings control panel within WordPress. You want to allow search engines to crawl and index your web site.

Some Great Plugins:

1.) Google Analytics Plugin.
You need to know what’s happening with your web site visitors, you need a Google Analytics plugin. This plugin allows you to simply drop your Google analytics code into a box and click the submit button. WordPress does the rest. Take your pick of a Google Analytics plugin here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/search.php?q=google+analytics&sort=

2.) Google Analytics Dashboard.
Want to see what’s happening with your web site traffic without having to go and login to Google? Install the Google Analytics Dashboard and get analytics information displayed right on your WordPress dashboard. Get the plugin here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/google-analytics-dashboard/

3.) Google XML Sitemap Generator.
Since you’ll be generating all sorts of blogging goodness, you’ll be adding pages and pages to your web site. The XML site map generator adds every new page of brilliance that you author to an XML document that gives search engines a running list of all new and existing content that you generate. It’s important to note, you need to create a Google WebMaster account and submit your XML site map for maximum SEO efficiency. I prefer this particular plugin: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/google-sitemap-generator/

4.) All In One SEO Pack.
Each page and post of your WordPress site deserves a unique title tag and meta description. WordPress does not allot for this out of the box, so the All In One SEO pack is a great tool for serious SEO Types. The tool allows you to customize each tag on each new page and post that you create. This plugin is a MUST have. You can grab this plugin here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/all-in-one-seo-pack/

5.) Related Links.
One of the core strategies of any successful SEO campaign is a strong back linking and related content linking strategy. Once you’ve composed a few hundred articles of brilliance, you’ll want your web site visitors and Google to be able to access other nuggets of wisdom that you’ve created. This plugin lists all related articles to the one you’ve just composed making it easier for the end user to click, and it enables ease of use for search engines to crawl to the related articles. There are a few here that are great options: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/search.php?q=better+related+links&sort=

There are of course more SEO type plugins which we’ll share with you soon, but the ones listed above are critical in my humble opinion.

Is your SEO guy focused on how many clicks they can drive to your web site or how many Quality clicks they can drive to your web site? A click is a click, a quality click is speaking to a client and addressing their needs.

A quality click comes from a quality prospect who typed in or addressed a particular problem in Google and landed on your web site because your site actually can solve that prospects problems. Obviously, the more problems that are solved, the more likely that website visitor is to buy your goods or services. In the SEO world, quality trumps quantity all day long.

Take a look at some of the keywords / keyphrases that your SEO guy is optimizing your web site for:

- Do they make sense?
- Are they relevant to your products and services?
- Did they do the home work and send you a detailed Internet Marketing plan prior to beginning a campaign?
- Are the keywords the language that your prospects speak or the language that you as an insider speak?

The biggest foundation of any SEO campaign is knowing what your prospects are typing into a browser way before the first bit of copy is optimized. If your business demands quality, your web site demands and deserves quality clicks.

- Rebecca Lieb, The Truth About Search Engine Optimization.

So many prospects come to me and want us to get them 12,342 inbound links to their web site with hopes that this will supercharge their SEO efforts and get them to rank as number 1 in Google. Inbound links DO have a large impact on how Google judges your web site and subsequently, how it ranks or arranges your web site in the organic search engine results, however, the quality of those inbound links is far more important than the quantity of those inbound links.

It’s so important that if you do seek inbound links (which you should) that you carefully and selectively choose who that link will be from. Consider the following pointers prior to launching a link building campaign for your web site:

- Be certain that the web sites you are requesting links from are relevant to your industry / products / services.
- Make certain that the web site isn’t shady, deceptive or sketchy.
- Ask yourself, would you be proud to associate with this particular web site?
- Check the Google Pagerank of the web site, it would be ideal to get links with PR4 web sites and above.
- Do a quick google search and make certain that you can find the domain in Google (assuring it’s not banned, etc.)

The most important factor with link building is relevancy. Make certain that it’s a good fit for both parties and be prepared to offer reciprocal links back to their web site. It’s the right thing to do and helps both parties thrive.

There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t receive an invitation to partner with an offshore SEO company. They call, they spam, they try every trick in the book to try and get me to send them some of our SEO work. But here’s the thing: I never will. Here’s a few reasons why:

1.) I hate being spammed. Sorry, this is strike 1.
2.) I hate being spoofed. Oftentimes, the offshore companies spoof a local Orlando number so that I think they are local and will call them back.
3.) They cannot compose a complete grammatically correct sentence. When I get spam that is phrased like “We are global leader in SEO and need like partner with your company to make company and customer happy in google” I’m not feeling good about their content generation capabilities.

SEO is not all about a scientific equation that can be bottled and sold by the cheapest vendor. If you are looking to outsource your SEO, look for the following key characteristics in a firm:

1.) You can find the SEO company in the search engines. (ex… http://www.google.com/search?q=orlando+seo
2.) They can write complete sentences that make sense.
3.) They answer their phone and want to learn about your business and your target prospects.
4.) They are not obsessed with ALT tags, H1 Tags, robots.txt files, etc.
5.) They have existing clients that are actually ranked under relevant keywords / keyphrases.

I am often asked why it is so very important to have an ongoing SEO strategy for businesses. The simple answer is this: Search never sleeps. Search engines are changing, people are changing, search habits change, new products come out, new techniques are mastered, etc.. If your web site is not evolving or rolling with the punches, your competition may be.

Here are three critical components your marketing team (or SEO firm) should be paying attention to daily when it comes to SEO.

1.) Content, Content, Content. Develop a content strategy to keep your web site fresh, compel your audience and keep Google coming back for more. I suggest utilizing an editorial calendar of sorts to plot out your content and deploy when the timing is right. This ensures that you have a solid plan of attack.

2.) Study Your Web Site Analytics / Stats. If your business or SEO firm is not paying attention to what the visitors to your web site are doing and how they got there, you are missing out on huge SEO opportunities. Web stats give marketers so much amazing information that is necessary to forge ahead and stay on top of the search engines. You’ll find keywords you never thought of focusing on, stats on how your visitors are interacting with your content, even information about where those visitors are coming from geographically.

3.) Tune In To Search Engines. Make it a habit to keep an eye on the search engines such as Google, Bing or Yahoo. They are constantly rolling out new products, some good, some not so good. By paying attention to what they are doing, you can alter or enhance your search strategy based on the latest and hopefully greatest search products out there.

I was speaking with a prospect fairly recently who let me know that their web site SEO was just fine. Just fine indeed, they had jammed some keywords in their copy, they started a Facebook page, they had even written two blog posts already. They wrote those blog posts 1 year ago. They stuffed those keywords in 6 months ago. They have 3 people following them on their facebook page, they had not updated their web site in 6 months. The key question they had for me was, why isn’t my web site ranking in Google?

The answer is simple. They launched their web site and walked away. They may have gone through the right motions initially, but ultimately, they waited on Google to digest and instantly shower their web site with amazing organic SEO rankings. It didn’t happen.

Here are 3 things you MUST do to get Google’s attention.

1.) BLOG. 2 blogs will not cut it. 2 content and relevant blogs a week is more like it. Remember that Google is hungry for content. Feed it. It will keep coming back for more.

2.) PARTICIPATE, DON’T ANTICIPATE. The more active that you are online in forums, blogs, social media, etc., the more Google will take you seriously.

3.) WATCH & REACT. Pay very close attention to your web site analytics / stats. If you aren’t watching the keyword searches, bounce rates, inbound links, etc., you are missing out on opportunities for SEO and web site improvements.

What SEO really comes down to is this. Create and share useful and amazing content for people to digest. Google should be your second consideration.

–Thomas Edison

Like all things in business, the more effort that you put forward, the farther your business will go.

If your company has a web site and if you want that web site to be found in the search engines, (where EVERYONE is looking) you need SEO or Search Engine Optimization. SEO is essentially the process of optimizing your web site to be found by your target demographic. To truly succeed at SEO, it requires a commitment. The commitment SHOULD be to provide and deliver rich quality content to your prospects first, and to the search engines secondly. The commitment is deep. It involves work. It involves dedication, stick-to-itiveness and common sense.

Here are a few pointers that can help you keep your business and Google on great speaking terms:

– Blog Often. Create rich content, optimize that content for your audience. It is key to know what keywords THEY use, not what keywords YOUR business may use. Google loves to see that you are contributing to the Internet, capitalize on that.

– Use online press releases. Share your good news with the rest of the world by creating a relevant and newsworthy press release. Be certain to include your company URL (web site address) on the release for maximum Google power.

– On Site SEO. Make certain that your web site is using Title tags, optimized copy, text links, alt tags, etc.. You may wish to consult or hire a professional SEO firm (like mine….) to help.

If you need a second opinion on your current SEO initiatives, feel free to give me a call. We’ll take the time to point you in the right direction. In Orlando: call 407-830-4550, Nationwide: 866-998-6886.

The problem. A lot of web designers will use graphic images in the navigation of the web site and simply add a URL when clicked to get to that respective page. The problem with this technique is that Google does not follow images, so it can’t really get to the page in question in order to crawl and index it (at least not easily.).

The solution. Use text links in the navigation whenever possible, a lot can be done utilizing CSS these days so that aesthetics are not compromised. If it is not possible to switch the navigation to text links, consider adding a footer to your web site and adding those text links there. The overall goal should be to let Google crawl your web site as deeply as it can. The more pages that get indexed in the search engine, the higher the odds that you will have a successful organic SEO campaign.

– Feed The Search Engines: Just like you’d serve your honey up a tempting medium rare filet and lobster tale, it’s time to feed the search engine some well written content, corporate news, organized white papers, blogs, etc. The more you feed them, the more they love you and come back.

– Simplify their life. Create an XML sitemap on your web site so that search engines can easily crawl and get right to the heart of your web site. It’s fast and easy, simply google : free xml sitemap, run it, and share the love.

– Clean up your act. Is your web site a mess? Do you have a links all over the place? Nothing shares the love more than tidying up your space. Search engines don’t have time to digest noise and busyness. Clean up your web site and share the love.

– Jelly of the month club subscription. It’s the gift that gives the whole year long. Make a commitment to feed the search engines on a monthly basis, they will love you and keep coming back. They will also start sharing the love back in terms of search engine results.

Need help sharing the love? Call me. In Orlando: 407-830-4550, Nationwide: 866-998-6886. We know search engines inside and out and get your business found.

I was meeting with our CFO this morning, we were having a great discussion about On Target’s services and products and he made this statement: SEO Is The Most Important Thing you sell…. A very simple statement, but it smacked in the face. We have built so many web sites in town, we have helped so many people climb in the rankings, when you put those two together, you get a powerful amazing marketing force. Take one of the software companies we work with: we rebuilt their web site from a flash clunker into an SEO friendly web site, the result, they are now playing with the big boys in Google, they are in the top three organic results: (Not number one yet, but we’re working on it.) When this company gets leads and converts them, they are worth over $40,000. Is SEO important to them? Yes, it’s critical to growing their bottom line.

Sure, your web design and image is important, I’m not here to understate that, BUT, without SEO, without getting that web site indexed well under key terms that your prospects are searching for, you might as well just frame that web site as a pretty picture and hang it on your office wall. If your web site wasn’t created with SEO in mind, if your web designer did not even consider copy, optimization, getting your site found, it’s time to talk with my company. Anyone can build your company a web site, but not every company knows SEO and Internet Marketing inside and out.

Before you hire that pretty shiny web design company, make sure that they are well versed in SEO, search for them, Google them, ask them a million questions about rankings, results, etc. It is that important to your business.

“Character is doing the right thing when nobody’s looking. There are too many people who think that the only thing that’s right is to get by, and the only thing that’s wrong is to get caught. ” ~J.C. Watts

Getting caught spamming Google, Bing or Yahoo with unethical SEO practices can be catastrophic to companies who are ranked well in the search engines. Trusting your Search engine optimization to a company who may not play by the rules can be a very dangerous game. It’s critical for your business to choose an SEO company with character and one with a solid understanding of the term ethics….

Here are a few elements your business should consider before hiring an SEO firm:

1.) How long have they been around?
These days, anyone can start a web site: if a so called SEO company just popped up out of nowhere and start cold calling your business, you should probably run the other way.

2.) How much experience do they have?
If Mike the mechanic decided he didn’t like changing tires any longer last week and thought running an SEO company would be a blast, you may want to shop elsewhere.

3.) What is their approach / method to obtaining Organic SEO rankings?
If you hear a lot of noise about keyword stuffing, hidden text, bogus domain names or any other type of shady tactics, you really need to run to the nearest exit.

4.) How is the content on their web site?
Content is truly king when it comes to Organic SEO growth. Any SEO company worth their salt understands that they need to contribute useful, relevant and unique content to the Internet in order to be worthy in Google’s eyes of rankings. Keeping a web site current is mission critical

5.) Can You Find Them?
If you can’t find an SEO company by doing a few local SEO company searches, ex… Orlando SEO, they probably can’t get your business found.

At the end of the day, you need to protect your business, doing business with like minded folks who believe in doing the right thing is mission critical. I’m happy to discuss your SEO / Web Design & Marketing needs in person: give me a call today: 407-830-4550.

Everyone throws the term SEO around these days, some know what they are talking about, even more do not. But search engine optimization is now a vital part of any online Internet marketing campaign and I wanted to share 5 key SEO tips that we as a company live by:

1.) Know Your Market.
While it sounds so simple, many companies just don’t know who they are marketing to online. The key with any great SEO campaign is to obviously get found where your target market / demographic is searching.

2.) Keyword Research.
Once you’ve isolated your demographic, it’s time for some homework. Use a tool like the Google Adwords Keyword tracker or WordTracker to isolate the most important, most relevant keywords to your market.

3.) Write Amazing Copy.
True SEO is all about providing your web site visitors with a compelling reason to visit your web site in the first place. Be sure to feed your web site visitors / prospects with as much rich amazing optimized copy that you can. Please, never ‘borrow’ copy from another web site…..

4.) Rinse & Repeat.
Don’t give up. We all love instant gratification, and the harsh truth to the SEO world is that Google will kick the tires on your web site and your web content. Understand that Google wants to give its site visitors the best results, if yours is not the best and not the most relevant and up to date, don’t count n Google to index your content lickity split.

5.) Analyze.
I’m astonished when a business comes to us and does not have any data about what their web site has been doing, who has been visiting, how long they stay at the web site, what keywords they used to get to that web site, etc.. As SEO marketers, web site analytics are truly the life blood to each SEO campaign we run. If we aren’t paying attention to the stats, we would never know what moves to make next.

I’ve worked with so many companies who hand me a list of keywords that they would like us to incorporate into a search engine marketing campaign. Upon reviewing the keywords, you would be amazed just how far off some companies are when it comes to knowing what their market is typing into a Google search. I’ve seen doctors give me the full Latin name for the procedures they perform, I’ve seen engineers give me a list of a list of fully technical specifications as keywords, I’ve seen a construction equipment company hand me the full parts list for a 1974 Honda pressure washer. These keywords clearly mean a lot to the business owner, but in reality, may mean nothing to the actual prospect who is seeking to purchase that nose job, laser etcher or pressure cleaner.

It is so very important to KNOW what your prospects are typing in to find you in a search engine query. One of the best ways to do this is to use one of the following tools prior to composing that new blog, white paper, or content page. These keyword tools help you to know and isolate particular keywords to target prior to embarking on an Organic SEO or pay per click campaign:

1.) Google AdWords Tool
2.) WordTracker Keyword Tool
3.) SEMRush

Don’t waste time guessing what your prospects may be typing in, take the few minutes to discover actual search volume, relevancy, reach, etc.. Otherwise, you could be wasting valuable time and spinning your wheels.

Is your web site actually blocking Google from doing anything with it? Ever wonder why your web site is no where to be found when you search for it?

I visited a printing web site in town this week via a direct link that a friend had forwarded me. This is a great printer in Orlando, they do amazing work, but their web site makes Google and other search engines run the other way seeking a better web site to digest and include in their search results, here’s why:

Google Blocker 1.
The web site has a large graphical landing page. No copy, no words, no text, just a big ole click here to enter. Google finds NO content from the very beginning, and since search engines do not follow graphics, it cannot even get past the front page, EVEN IF there was actual content once / if it was able to get in.

Google Blocker 2.
Once you click that big ole enter now button (that again, Google does not follow) there is still NOTHING for Google to crawl. The interior home page was built in Flash, no copy and no content. Nothing for Google to bite on once again.

Google Blocker 3.
As I dug deeper into the web site, I noticed that EVERY page was built in flash, so really, this web site only had one page period that had nothing to it. Translation, there is nothing for Google to see, crawl, index, digest, rank, evaluate, etc..

Tom Blocker (bonus block…)
This particular web site was playing techno music in the background which I could not easily turn off. This does NOT annoy Google, but it DOES annoy me. PLEASE do not add music (especially NOT techno music) to your web site unless you sell music to people who listen to music and who actually like your music.

Google seeks actual meat and potatoes (text and not graphical text), not pretty graphics, flash presentations, big ole buttons etc. If you want your web site to be found when searchers need your products and services the most, be sure to have it built by an SEO expert.

In 2011, your business needs to be found in Google, let’s make sure that we aren’t blocking one of the most visited web sites in the universe from seeing your web site. Call me, In Orlando: 407-830-4550, Nationwide: 866-998-6886.
