There’s MORE to Search Engine Optimization (SEO) than Meta Tags.
One of our favorite clients emailed us today concerned about an email he received from a so called SEO who happens to SPAM people in order to drum up business. The brilliant marketer informed our client(s) that if we adjusted some meta keywords and meta descriptions he would have much more success in the search engines and subsequently make a trillion more dollars a year.
This particular client is already number one on most major terms for his industry, so playing with his meta keyword tags can’t really get him much higher in the search engine rankings (SERPS.)
Here’s the truth… first and foremost, any putz that is sending you an email trying to solicit business from you doesn’t get it to begin with, that’s what the delete button is for. Secondly and more importantly, there is so much more to SEO then just meta tags. In fact, Google doesn’t pay nearly any attention to the meta keywords tag. Here are some of the most important elements (IMHO) in SEO.
1.) CONTENT. New, unique and relevant content written for PEOPLE not search engines will help you grow in the search engines.
2.) THE WEB SITE ITSELF: A Web site that is SEO friendly. Not all flash, not a one page wonder, not using all graphics for navigation, etc.
3.) RELEVANT title tags do help to inform Google about the content that corresponds on that particular page.
4.) XML SITE MAPS submitted to Yahoo, MSN & Google. Make it easier on the search engines to find your content. Hint: go here and make one for free: http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/
5.) LINK BAITING: Attract Relevant and like minded web sites to link back to you (Referred to as Link Baiting.) The more cool stuff you publish, the more people want to share your information.
6.) CONTENT: Yes I said it twice. It’s that important. Consider using a FREE WordPress blog installed on YOUR domain and start inspiring people / prospects / customers with your knowledge of your particular industry. Content is truly king and feeds Google what it’s seeking. Keep Google fed, keep your rankings climbing.
There are of course more factors that play a part in all of this, I just personally feel that these are amongst the most important variables.
