SEO & Blogging : 2 Critical Tips For Success. – 18. November, 2009

Blogs are a great tool to keep your customers / prospects in touch with what your company is up to.  Blogs are also a great asset to your ongoing search engine optimization efforts.  Google loves blogs, blogs are a great source of ‘food’ to the search engine so as you are composing your blog posts, it’s important to keep SEO in mind.  From my personal blogging & SEO experience, I’ve noticed that Google pays a good deal of attention to the blog post title and the URL of the actual blog post, so here are two critical SEO pointers to consider while utilizing a wordpress blog:

1.) Permalink Structure: The permalink of your blog is the actual name of the URL that is generated once you hit publish on your wordpress blog.  The default wordpress permalink structure is ugly to say the least, so it’s a good idea to change your permalink structure on your blog to a more seo friendly structure, i.e, yourdomain.com/blog/seo-help rather then yourdomain.com/blog/?p=S. You can learn more about this at the wordpress.org web site: http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks.
IMPORTANT: Changing this can be volatile, consult your web master prior to switching your permalink structure.

Think Before You Comment On That Blog…. – 11. November, 2009

I absolutely love the glowing comments that I receive on each blog post that I write, folks who tell me that I should have won a pulitzer and that I should buy cialis, competitors who let me know that they really agree with me so that they can get an inbound link off of my web to theirs, to the fine folks who leave mumbo jumbo and embed malicious code in the comments. I do sincerely appreciate the legitimate blog comments I get, but I have to say, it truly becomes a chore to sift through the garbage.

So, here are some general pointers about commenting on anyone’s blog:

How Often Should You Blog? – 17. October, 2009

I get asked this question quite a bit: How often should I blog? This really depends on you: what is the purpose of your blog? What are you seeking to accomplish? Are you trying to build a following (Tribe) or are you just trying to keep your web site content fresh? If the answer is keeping your content fresh, I’d say at least twice a week. From a Tribe building perspective, I think it’s critical to keep feeding your followers, HOWEVER, keep in mind, if  you inundate people with your message, they may eventually turn it off and become numb to your entries. I think it’s also crucial to ‘mix it up’ in terms of distribution. Keep people hungry for more and try to not be methodical about blog delivery times.

Be Yourself When You Blog. – 24. June, 2009

Anyone who reads this blog (all two of you….) knows that I am all about creating quality content for your web site visitors. Your visitors HAVE to come first, your seo rankings will follow. One of the biggest mistakes that I see people make is over-thinking their content. They mean well, they are excited about contributing, but they labor over EVERY single word and thought. Subsequently, their blogs are mechanical, they are stale, they are BORING and without life.

Surely your company has a personality. There is some unique quirk that you may have, there are surely some weaknesses, there are many strengths and talents. The point is, let that personality come out through your corporate voice. No one really wants to read statistics, numbers, equations, etc. They want to know about you, they want to know about your company and how your company can benefit them. When you compose a blog, be yourself, I’m not suggesting that you alert the world about your irritable bowel syndrome or your overwhelming desire to start a barbie doll collection, but let your true personality come out and come alive in your blog composition.

100% Bounce Rate In Google Analytics? – 8. May, 2009

We have a client who creates an ample amount of fresh content for their web site, in fact, they churn out great stuff on a daily basis.  They recently got concerned when they saw their bounce rate in their Google Analytics and asked us to take a look:

We saw many unique phrases (like, an apple a day keeps the doctor away) being typed into Google and then bouncing instantly off of the web site:  This particular web site is all about senior health care but each of the articles that they are publishing are not SPELLING those keywords out.  The bottom line, their content needs to incorporate Keyword rich titles and they need to remember to incorporate more industry specific keywords in their articles. This will help attract TARGETED traffic that is more prone to stick around on the site and take the desired call to action.

Sharing is Caring. – 13. March, 2009

Want to build quality inbound links to your web site or to your blog?  Visit like minded neighborhoods and become part of the community.  So many folks think that by jotting down a few rants in a blog post that their web site will take off and fuel an inferno of inbound links.  That’s not the case.  The more you share your comments, expertise, observations, the more inbound link potential you have.  See a post you disagree with? Share your opinion! Like someones point of view?  Let em know.

The internet is about the people and community.  Be a blog comment contributor and help build the community.

A Few Blogging Tips For Business. – 1. July, 2008

I’m often asked what the benefit of blogging is to a web site and my answer is consistent each time: Adding rich and relevant content.  Each one of our new web site designs incorporates a blog which we encourage our clients to utilize.  We encourage folks to be the ‘expert‘ in their field. By installing a blog such as wordpress on your domain, you are backing up the ‘product’ or content on your web site.

The option of running a blog off site does exist, however, in an ideal world, the blog should be installed on your domain and updated regularly.  There are a few different schools of thought regarding blogging frequency, but I recommend a blog at least three times a week.  This keeps visitors and subscribers wanting more and coming back and not being overwhelmed with excessive information.

Your Blog & SEO : Keep It Fresh – 23. January, 2008

If you haven’t noticed lately, Google has been voraciously indexing new and fresh content, sometimes within minutes.  This is an amazing opportunity to keep your site current, fresh and relevant in the eyes of Google.  Diligence in adding your relevant, non-duplicate content will most likely catch the coveted eye of the Google bot…. the more you add, the more you feed Google’s bot, and the more Google notices, the more it will be back.

Write your blogs for your target audience, shower them with news, updates, insight, events in your industry and watch your following grow.
