Internet Marketing & PR : When People Say Mean Stuff – 8. July, 2008

Very odd that I was about to write this blog and then saw this video on CNN: As the web becomes more and more accessible to a larger audience, the odds of negative comments being posted about your business become much more probable.  Whether the offending comments are true or not is irrelevant, the fact is, negative comments found in a Google search can hurt, even cripple your company and it’s reputation.

What’s the best way to deal with this scenario?  Honesty is always the best policy: if you see a negative comment about your company / organization: you have to respond.  A lack of response is often times deemed as an admission of guilt.  Be sincere and genuine in your response and obviously defend yourself if the need arises.  Keep in mind that the blogger or blog in question may or may not accept your comment as many of them are moderated and not automated.  In this case, it would be important to create your own blog post explaining the situation and / or details and your defense without sounding ‘defensive’.

High PageRank or Great Organic Search Results? – 20. May, 2008

There is much debate over Google’s PageRank system. Ask yourself this question, “What carries more weight – High PageRank or Great Organic results”? In my expert opinion, results speak louder than words and PageRank in most cases is just a lot of talk and not always substance. I’ve done a bunch of research on this topic and here’s what I found. In a lot of cases where I’ve seen a high page ranking on a Web Site, I also noticed their organic search results do not always coincide. Let’s face it; if you are hell bent on having a high Google PageRank and your customers can’t find you or your services on the Internet, then you need to fire your SEO Company (or yourself). What’s the point? Why bother. If you’re not driving traffic to your Web Site what’s the reason for having one? To exchange links? Use your phone and make connections that way. You’ll be more effective.

It’s funny how many times I’m on the phone with a potential client looking at their competition and I see a high page rank on a site built entirely in Flash. Yet when I do a simple Google search for services in their area, I can’t find them!  This tells me they spend more time link exchanging and less time getting the best bang for their buck – with straight up “White Hat Search Engine Optimization”.

Google Page Rank Update : Check Your PR – 13. January, 2008

Google has been putting in some overtime lately: check your web site for the latest Google Page Rank Update.  We noticed a change in PR on late afternoon Friday.  While there are many schools of thought on page rank and it’s importance with organic search engine results, it is just one tool of measurement that we use to gauge a web site’s popularity. Page Rank can go up and just as easily go down as Google alters its algorithm.

You can download the google toolbar here to view page rank on each site you visit: you will need to activate that particular feature once you download and install the tool in your browser.
