Who’s Tribe Are You In? – 31. May, 2009

Many businesses are starting to embrace social media and social networking tools such as Twitter, Linkedin, etc.  We are all desperate to start building out our ‘network’ so that we ‘look’ popular to everyone else.  It’s not cool if there are only 2 people following you! You need hundreds or even thousands of followers right?

I see a bit of a danger in following every Tom, Dick & Harry that you can find on Twitter…. There are a ton of spammers out there, like the real estate agent in Utah who keeps posting all of his real estate listings with every new tweet, or the multi level marketer who is DYING for you click his tiny url and make millions today.  Be careful with who you associate yourself with online: your clients and prospects do take notes and look to you for leadership and expertise.

Social Marketing : DON’T Be that Guy or Girl. – 19. May, 2009

Everyone is on Twitter, BUT WHY are they on Twitter? Many don’t have a clue why, they just know that they need to be there.

Let’s pick on Real Estate Agents for one second: PLEASE do not use your Twitter account to list every home that you have ever listed in the world in the hopes that someone just might be snooping around Twitter to find a home in Bobsville, Wisconsin and call you.

Your Web Site Misses You. – 13. April, 2009

Many people come to us and know that they want a web site.  Yup, that shiny new web site is all I want, the rest will take care of itself.  NOT True.  Your web site needs to feed two audiences, your prospects and search engines.  Search engines want to know that you are feeding them, they are hungry, they crave relevancy and unique content. One way of feeding your audiences is by contributing to your web site’s growth.  That’s where Internet marketing and organic seo come into play.  You need to be contributing.

There are many ways to contribute to your web sites growth: you can blog (which we highly recommend), you can tweet or use Twitter, you can form a group of like minded folks on Facebook and discuss your industry, you can join linkedin and ‘link in’ with other professionals: the key: is DOING IT. Some people are hesitant to just jump right into to social networking or blogging, some people need a push, other’s spend days and days trying to learn about blogging, reading books about twitter, listening to every Guru’s advice on the planet…. Then there are people who just do it. The people who just do it, learn, they grow, they succeed, they fail, they are invested. The people who do it get the cheese, the people who do it make stuff happen.

Fake Networking. Closing business still requires a REAL relationship. – 23. October, 2008

You have all indeed heard of Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, etc. Many companies are now trying to figure out how to ‘harness’ the power of the social networking phenomena and several have asked us how they can use facebook, twitter, etc. to grow their business and increase leads, etc.  Here’s the simple answer…. If you have a facebook account, how many of those ‘friends’ do you have that you actually care about, or have thought about in the past fifteen years?  I found myself the other day noting that I had over 102 friends: how many of those are actually true GENUINE friends? Friends that would take a bullet for me? Three of them, tops.

People are keeping score of how many friends they have, they don’t want to be rude and DENY facebook friendship, so they hit accept. Then it becomes a challenge to see how many friends you have.  How can you close business with people who you have not seen in over 17 years? Do you have REAL relationships with these folks? Here’s my point, you can’t expect to close a $10,000 website through facebook or through your popular twitter page. You may alert some of your friends who HAPPEN to own a business that you create websites for a living, etc. and they MAY think of you IF they ever need you, but other than that? No REAL relationship, no closing, no business, no dice, no soup for you.
