We usually rely on The University of Oxford to release their most annoying phrases used in the English language each year, I couldn’t source them for the life of me for 2009, so I’ve compiled my own top 10 annoying list of phrases that stood out in 2009: . As 2010 opens and we find ourselves with a renewed energy to blog and promote our web sites through SEO and social media, we all need to be aware of what phrases to NOT use in our tweets, facebook status updates, blog posts, articles, etc.
These phrases stand out to me as the MOST annoying and overused phrases of 2009: Feel free to add any that I missed.
1 – Really? Really?
Yes, REALLY. This has to go. Enough said.
2 – I’m Just Saying
You’re just saying what? This one makes no sense. Let it die.
3 – I’m not gonna lie to you….
Well, I sure as hell hope you aren’t going to lie to me. Why would you lie to me? Over, done, put a fork in it.
4 – Seriously? Seriously?
When my 6 year old starts using this phrase, you know it’s been around the block and needs to go away. Seriously Dad? Seriously? Yes, seriously, I don’t joke about bed time.
5 – With all due respect
Well thank you for the respect, this usually prefaces an insult, so why beat around the bush?
6 – At the end of the day….
What happens at the end of the day? Sleep? Bad Karma? Run out of toilet paper? What….
7 – We have a disconnect….
Just tired of hearing it. Disconnect this word from your business vocab please.
8 – Reach out…
I need you to Reach out to Bob and discuss his TPS reports. Bob doesn’t want to be reached out. Just go talk to him.
9 – Shoot me an email
We don’t shoot emails. We send emails. End of story.
10 – To be honest with you….
No, I’d prefer to live in a world of lies. Lie to me, I like it.
